Does it actually help with echo?
The felt backing behind each slat is what does the work: instead of sound bouncing straight off a hard, flat wall, some of it reaches the felt layer and is absorbed rather than reflected. In practice that usually means less ringing when you clap, reduced harshness in conversation, and better speech clarity in the room — not full soundproofing, but a noticeably softer, calmer feel to a hard-surfaced space.
